Please, please, please protest peacefully...
A man was killed, once again, when he should’ve been helped, and action is necessary to force change. Make your voices heard, loud and clear!
But looting and destruction is how we end up giving Trump 4 more years.
I’m fearful that our union might not be able to survive that...
Outrage over the shooting in West Philadelphia set off protests by demonstrators wanting to know why less-lethal force wasn’t used. But police said the officers were not equipped with Tasers.
Monday night saw violence and looting, leading to dozens of arrests and the officers’ injuries, most the result of thrown objects. One officer was struck by a pickup and taken to the hospital with a broken leg and other injuries, police said.
Businesses were looted, and five police vehicles and one fire vehicle were vandalized, police said. Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said 91 people were arrested during the unrest, including 11 on charges of assaulting police and 76 for burglary.

Walter Wallace’s father was denouncing the looting and violence. These riots hurt small business owners and communities far more than they hurt the system they’re protesting.

Its worth noting that the police response to protests across the country have been pretty abhorrent. If you play dress up and treat the people you’re supposed to serve as your enemy at war guess what happens?
I recently watched the Chicago 7 and fuck me does it feel too familiar.

The worst job in the world is being a Philly beat cop.

Lets say s uicide by cop is now the cop’s fault. Also, vandalism and arson are an appropriate response to “being ignored”. Fine. Burn down the police station. Why would you loot a foot locker? Even under that bullshit logic it still makes no sense.
Makes it mighty hard to generate even a semblance of sympathy.
Isn’t our species just the best?

Dood, what the actual fuck. The police dropped an incendiary bomb and it blew up a whole city block?!
A lso before that, 9 people got life sentences for the shooting of one cop. I’ve read 2 articles and there are just so many questions.

Three years after his “I Have A Dream” speech”:
So sad that we’ve made so little progress on these issues in the past 55 years...
I’m not condoning violence. It’s completely at odds with the cause, and counterproductive, but I understand why some people end up acting out in these ways when they see yet another person that looks just like them gunned down in the street by the people who are sworn to serve and protect them.
In this case, it was not the officers’ fault. They were under-
equipped and insufficiently
trained for the scenario in which they were called to. I’m sure they’re sick that it ended the way it did (just like I am).

What you call suicide by cop in this instance many would consider murder. This is a national problem and police are shooting people with mental health issues every day. Here in SLC they are reviewing all the use of k9s in the last few years because they were turning them loose on ethnic people for no reason and a little while ago they shot a 12 yr old scrawny kid who ran while have a mental episode. The fact that you have no sympathy for the people being mur dered because you don’t like other people’s response is disgusting.

That bit at the end I think is really poignant.
I think it is often forgotten that the problems we face are not unique, rather the number and type of problems groups find themselves in can be particularly toxic and difficult to overcome by how they interact with each other.

Growing up among the repressed and seeing the root cause of it (in 2 countries) now as an adult, I guarantee you all that nothing will change the mind of those elite that keep us down . All that disgusting, hateful and deplorable view for their fellow man has just been further enforced and praised by the comments and rhetoric of the current billionaire con-man in charge. Don’t let the church going, “I have a friend who is X” and any other excuse foo l you in to thinking that they don’t know exactly what they are doing. All horse shit. I promise that if a large movement starts here in Houston, i’ll in the mix! It might not help, but given the options, I choose fighting fire with fire! I see the pictures on the news, they are my family. Whether it’s not getting hired because they look a certain way, excluded in any beneficial programs or being completely disenfranchised while THEY taunt us? Fuck that noise!
They commit crimes too! A ton all the time
They ARE racist!
They are anti-woman’s rights
They are anti-LGBT
Republicans are actual scum and democrats literally do nothing!
MONEY controls them both and WE are dying, THEY ARE NOT!
Or something like that idk. Working 3 goddamn jobs keeps me busy more than anything to really research shit lol

I completely empathize with
your mindset, though I can’t truly know how it feels
, and I know
it sucks playing the long game (when the “game” has already gone on far too long and the odds are never in your favor
...), but what if short-term actions now end up with way worse results in the
longer-term? The more some people see of this, the more scared they get, and in the “law & order” mindset, which could help Trump get another term, and who knows what after that?
I know Biden has his own issues
, but clearly things should improve for oppressed communities more under the blue team right?
I’m just as upset with our choices as you, but a
narchy can’t be the answer...

People who armchair quarterback an armed man being shot have never and would never expose their own ass, hence the armchair.

This was the same era that led to the police assassination of the Black Panther movement but yeah that particular incident was pretty crazy even by those standards. If you decide that civil rights agitators are terrorists you can treat them as such, apparently. Shockingly similar attitude to what is going on now.

They made us, they’ll have to deal with us. Law and order can’t exist because the real criminals are the ones that made those laws . The system isn’t broken, it’s working exactly as designed. Short term and long term doesn’t apply when those at the top have hate and evil deep in their hearts despite what they say or do . I’d rather go down swinging than stand by and let ourselves continue the get fucked.

It’s almost like that’s what this conversation thread was about. It’s almost like any time someone even mentions the shitheads who loot and riot, some knight in shining armor reminds everyone that they shouldn’t be the focus. But god forbid it’s even mentioned.

I think the violence should be focused on, as that’s what gets people motivated. I giggle at grown men who are afraid of violence or wring their hands at the sight of it.

I’m neither afraid of violence, nor wringing my hands. I have 3 combat deployments. I feel for the small business owners and employees who are affected, as they’re often the very same demographic that the police is mistreating. I saw it in Minneapolis when I was posted at a hospital with the Guard a mile away from where George Floyd died. The POC including Blacks, Latinx, Native Americans, Somalis, and others in that neighborhood were angry that their jobs and places of work were taken from them. Were angry that rioters and looters were taking away from the message of their (justified) protests. But I’m sure they’d be happy that you’re speaking for them.

I t seems you are reading a bit too much into what I wrote. You’re a soldier, so obviously you see the benefit of violence as a tool, and you’re aware there’s always blowback, and y ou’ve also seen how pointless it is to bring a sign to a gun fight. We’ve had a century of peaceful protests. I’m not sure what people expect to happen next.
